How do I choose the right skis for me?
The most important thing to remember when choosing skis is to do a lot of homework. Choosing the right size, shape and quality of skis will greatly enhance your skiing experience. At Filarinskis we have dealt with many skiers, over many years and we are proud to offer our expert guidance on the matter. For more detailed advice please consult Filarinskis' trained staff.
What is the difference betweens mens and ladies skis?
Ladies skis are designed with emphasis on a womans size, shape, and lower centre of mass. Woman usually weigh less compared to their height, so their skis need need to be more flexible than mens skis, to have the optimum turning capacity. They are also usually more flexible and lighter in weight.
What length of skis are right for me?
Choose shorter skis if, you are a beginner or intermediate skier; you are a lighter weight than average for your height; you like a stiff ski; or you like to make short quick turns, such as bump skiing. Choose longer skis if, you ski fast and aggressively; you weigh more than average for your height; you do a lot of backcountry skiing; you like a softer ski; or prefer difficult, expert terrain.
For alpine beginners lengths are normally around 160cm, intermediates around 180cm,and experts around 195cm. Weight modifies these by about 10cm in either direction and some people argue about whether height matters at all. It is not a good idea to use skis longer than you are comfortable with, but once you reach a certain level of proficiency most people can work up to an 'expert' lengths with little difficulty.
How should I look after my skis?
Skis should be serviced at least once a season or about 12-15 skiing days if you ski for long sessions. This can be done yourself using a number of ski tools and waxes. Alternatively, our experienced technicians here at Filarinskis can do this for you at some excellent prices.
A ski service will flatten the bottom of your skis to get rid of gouges and nicks, and get rid of the burrs or scrapes. It will also get rid of nicks on the edges of your skis, wax your skis for a smooth slick ride and sharpen the edges of your skis, among other things.
By maintaining and servicing skis, you will be able to enjoy smoother and better rides and ensure your skis remain in the best condition at all times.
What length of ski poles do I require?
The easiest way is to put your arm down by your side, and then bend your arm up 90 degrees, ensuring your elbow is still by your side. Clench your fist, as if you were holding a ski pole. Measure the distance from your thumb to the floor and this will give you your required ski pole length.
Which ski boots should I choose?
There are many brands and designs of ski boots. It is extremely important that your boots fit correctly and are comfortable. If you are finding that your boots are making your toes cold or making your feet ache, you may need new boots. It is also important to use a pair of skiing socks. Do not add extra socks to make your boots fit.
Why do my boots rub?
There could be a couple of reasons, but most likely it will be that your boots are too big or your boots are not correctly done up.
How do you do the buckles up on the boots?
This will depend on the manufacturer, but essentially they should be drawn in tight, so that foot movement within the boot is restricted. The boot should then flex around the ankle. The boot should feel snug even before you do the buckles up, but be sure not to deform the foot within the boot otherwise after 15-20 minutes your foot will start to complain. It should be a fairly relaxed, but snug fit.
